Turning Trash into Treasure: How YouCan is Transforming Waste Management in Africa

YouCan is testing its product in Ethiopia with a plan to expand to the rest of the sentient (YouCan)

In the bustling streets of Africa’s major cities, waste is everywhere. Overflowing landfills, clogged drainage systems, and plastic-choked rivers have become symbols of an escalating crisis. But what if waste wasn’t just trash? What if it was an untapped economic resource, a job creator, and a solution to environmental pollution? Enter YouCan, an innovative waste management app that is redefining how Africa handles waste—turning a global crisis into an economic and environmental opportunity.

Waste management is a significant challenge across Africa. According to the World Bank, urban areas in Africa generate over 70 million tons of waste annually, with less than 10% properly recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, water bodies, or is burned, leading to environmental and health hazards. The problem isn’t just the volume of waste but the lack of efficient collection, segregation, and recycling systems.

For decades, waste in Africa has been treated as a burden rather than an asset. Informal waste collectors, who make a living from sorting and reselling recyclables, often face poor working conditions, low earnings, and limited opportunities. On the flip side, industries that rely on recycled materials struggle to get a steady supply because waste segregation at the source is virtually non-existent. This gap in the waste economy is exactly what YouCan aims to bridge.

YouCan, developed by Nakshatra Ventures Limited, is more than just a waste management app—it’s a game-changer for Africa’s waste economy. The app acts as a marketplace where individuals, businesses, and waste collectors can buy and sell segregated waste, ensuring that recyclable materials reach the right industries instead of being dumped in landfills.

Niharika, the founder of YouCan, initially had no background in waste management. However, her journey into this field started when she realized the severe lack of proper waste recycling structures in Ethiopia and many other African nations. While researching the recycling sector, she found that industries in need of recyclable materials couldn’t get a reliable supply because people were not segregating waste at the source. That’s when the idea for YouCan was born—a platform that connects waste generators, collectors, and recycling companies to create a seamless waste-to-resource cycle.

The YouCan app operates through two main interfaces. The Waste Generator App is for individuals, households, and businesses that generate waste. They can list their segregated waste on the app and request a pickup. The Waste Collector App ensures that once a waste generator requests a pickup, nearby collectors are notified, allowing them to collect the waste and sell it to recycling companies.

This system offers multiple benefits. For individuals, it provides a chance to earn money from waste instead of discarding it. For collectors, it creates more business opportunities, a structured system, and higher earnings. For recycling companies, it guarantees a consistent supply of segregated waste for production. For governments, it reduces waste management costs and improves environmental sustainability.

Waste management is often seen as a costly problem, but YouCan is proving that it can also be a profitable industry. The app is designed to monetize waste, giving economic incentives for people to participate in waste segregation and recycling. Job creation and income generation are among its major impacts. Informal waste pickers, who have long been undervalued, can now operate within a structured, tech-enabled system that guarantees a fair return for their work. The initiative also leads to reduced environmental pollution. By diverting recyclable materials from landfills and preventing open waste dumping, YouCan helps decrease air, land, and water pollution. Additionally, it fosters the development of a circular economy where waste is continuously reused and repurposed, reducing reliance on imported raw materials.

Implementing an innovative solution like YouCan in a developing market comes with its share of challenges. Cultural habits around waste disposal are deeply ingrained, and many communities lack awareness about waste segregation. The project also faced skepticism from waste collectors, who initially feared losing their livelihood. However, as transactions increased, they realized the app enhanced their earnings rather than replacing them.

YouCan is currently operating in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas, with plans to expand into other African cities. The company is actively working with government agencies, universities, and sustainability organizations to scale its impact.

Waste management in Africa is at a turning point. With the right technology, policies, and community participation, waste can become a valuable resource rather than an environmental disaster. YouCan is proving that business and sustainability can go hand in hand, creating a cleaner planet while driving economic growth.
